Portland, Oregon giving points for local patronage

Businesses in Portland, Oregon have created a city-wide incentive program, "Supportland" to reward shopping at local stores.

An universal punch and discount card for local vendors, the packaging emphases the common goal of supporting local businesses.

Eventually they envision Supportland programs across the country to encourage a nation-wide neighborhood….

Good find. Two of the strongest points:

1) Cultural Relevancy: The program takes is informed by the quirky character of the city with its creative visual design. Any replication of the program should be similarly attuned to its city -- local aesthetic awareness helps support the local, natives-only vibe.

2) Digital + social integration: The benefits card has a companion iPhone app and allows for cross post content to social networks like Twitter and Facebook. The website doesn't indicate whether there is a location-based aspect, but this would be a ripe use case for bringing in check-in function, also reemphasizing the local nature of the project.

Local businesses add vibrancy to their communities and break up the sameness of big box stores that can make somewhere special feel like just another carbon copy of Generica America. These small businesses often lack the resources to take on digital campaigns. Supportland and initiatives like it are stepping up to fill a gap and offer benefits of economies of scale to networks of small shops. Bravo!
